Al Dameer sent two urgent appeals to the UN special rapporteurs to take actions before healthcare sector collapse in the case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Gaza Strip
Gaza – On August 26th, 2020, Al Dameer Association for Human Rights sent two urgent appeals to the UN special rapporteurs; Mr, Michael Lynk, The Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967 and Mr. Jamie McGoldrick, the Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, to take urgent interventions before healthcare sector collapse in the case of Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the Gaza Strip.
The two appeals showed the bad health conditions in the Gaza strip in light of the lack of medical supplies and equipment, preventive supplies, laboratory tests in addition to lack of ventilators which make us as a human rights organization worried about the ability of the citizens of the Gaza strip to combat Coronavirus (COVID-19).
The appeals also identified the grave situation resulted from the continued closure and the blockade imposed by the Israeli occupation authorities on the Gaza Strip since 14 years and the repercussions of the internal Palestinian division which has led to a grave deterioration in health services and a permanent shortage of the essential medicines and medical devices including the laboratory testing materials, in addition to lack of specialized medical staff which made it difficult to meet the basic medical needs of Gaza residents in normal days.
AL Dameer warned of a major humanitarian disaster that would befall the Gaza Strip in case the number of the Coronavirus infected persons increased in light of the deterioration and fragility of the health sector and the measures of collective punishment taken by IOF against Gaza Strip citizens, such as closing crossings and land entry points, the naval blockade and failure of the Gaza power plant to provide electricity for citizens of Gaza, Accordingly Al Dameer demanded the two special rapporteurs to:
* Intervene in the spirit of their humanitarian and legal obligations to urge all relevant parties to work to rescue the health and medical situation in the Gaza Strip.
* Put pressure on the international community and humanitarian organizations to provide all the medicines and medical supplies needed by the health and medical sector immediately, to avoid further health risks on peoples’ lives and to neutralize health services at this difficult time
* Put pressure on the Israeli occupying power to comply with its obligations and to allow entry of all medical supplies into the Gaza Strip to ensure dignified living conditions for the citizens of the Gaza Strip.
